Becca cried a million tears and didn’t hear the knock at the door. Startled, she glanced up as a figure came up the stairs. Not Bronson. She’d forgotten to lock the door at the bottom of the stairs after he’d left.
Her heart slammed in her chest, and she grabbed the first thing she could get her hands on. A pillow. Now that’d do major damage to any intruder.
The light flickered on and she breathed a sigh of relief when she realized her intruder was Purr.
Purr hurried across the room, her focus on Becca’s tear-streaked face. “What are you doing sitting here with all the lights off?”
“Bronson and I had a fight.” She sniffled. “He hates what I’ve done to his place.”
“Your place, too,” Purr reminded her. She glanced around for the first time, taking in the changes.
Becca didn’t argue with Purr. This wasn’t her place. It was a temporary sanctuary, and she’d decorated it how she’d wanted it done, not insisting on input from the man who actually lived here and would be here long after she’d gone. She’d screwed up. Spent way too much money, and he hated it.
Purr stood and walked around the main room, still large despite some of the space taken by adding the bedroom walls. “It’s stunning.”
“He hates it.” Becca hiccupped and wiped at her eyes with a tissue.
“Oh, honey, I’m sure he doesn’t hate it. He’s probably just overwhelmed. Bronson doesn’t like huge changes in his life. He’ll get used to it. You’ve transformed it from a bachelor pad into a showplace.”
“But not a home.” Becca fought back the tears she’d thought had run dry. That was the problem. This wasn’t a home. It was a pretty shell with zero personal features.
Purr didn’t dispute her comment. “It’s the people inside who make it a home. Add some personal touches, things important to both of you. Hang some paintings you both love on the walls. Add some color. You do know that his favorite color is green, don’t you?”
She shook her head. She hadn’t known that. Sarg crawled onto her lap, and she absently stroked the purring cat, not caring for once about the black cat hair on her white shorts.
“Bronson can be an insensitive oaf at times, but he’ll come around. He genuinely cares for you, and he’ll get used to this place in due time.”
Becca’s head jerked up to meet Purr’s gaze. “You can see that?”
“Honey, I’ve known Bron for years. Of course I can see that. What I see when he looks at you is something I’ve never seen in him before. Yeah, he’s crazy about you.”
“Uh, yeah. I mean, we are married.” Becca didn’t know whether to be happy or scared to death. Purr was wrong. Bronson was a better actor than Purr gave him credit for.
Purr’s puzzled glance made Becca squirm. Of course, he was supposed to be crazy about her. That’s why they’d married. She couldn’t arouse Purr’s suspicions. The woman saw too much as it was, but she couldn’t be seeing that.
